Należą do nich lipopolisacharydowe pozostałości rozpadu ścian komórek bakterii […]

Autism and Inflammation

We are still not sure what causes autism, although it seems to be a non-homogeneous and multi-factor disease. However, all of the disorders caused by autism are coupled with an inflammation in the central nervous system. In a study at Johns Hopkins University, researchers compared the brains of deceased autistic people to neurotypical brains. Based on the large sample size, it has been conclusively proven that there exists an abnormal and excessive immunological reaction in the central nervous system of autistic people—the same reaction as can be seen in the case of an inflammation. The anomalies are visible in the cells of the so-called microglia. The microglia consists of immune system cells, which are always present in the brain and […]

Non-Absorbable Antibiotics for Intestinal Problems

In case of intestinal problems, the usual prescriptions are non-absorbable antibiotics, such as Rifaximin, Gentamicin, Neomycin, Vancomycin, and Nystatin. Is it a good idea? How can treatment with any kind of antibiotic be beneficial for intestinal health, when all the time we keep hearing that antibiotics have a detrimental effect on gut flora, and they should be supplemented by probiotics? I will try to explain this below. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is both a difficult to treat disease, and a complex medical problem (the topic has also been covered in this entry and this one). So, in short, what does it entail? Dysbiotic bacteria (ones causing adverse reaction, the opposite of symbiotic ones) ferment in the intestine and destroy the […]

Enemy Lurks in the Sandbox: TOXOCARIASIS

Playgrounds, sandboxes, or sand on the beach: they are all great places for children to play. As we know, kids “like to be dirty” or to build sand castles. Sadly, the little builders are stalked by a dangerous enemy that can ruin their health permanently. In unprotected playgrounds, freely roaming dogs and cats may leave “souvenirs” in the sand, when their owners let them loose and do not clean their excrement. Children get their hands dirty, put them in their mouth, and just like that, become hosts to some of the extremely dangerous parasitic diseases, such as toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis. Cute kitties and puppies Does your child want a dog or a cat, preferably a small and fluffy one? Or […]

Controlled by Aliens: TOXOPLASMOSIS

Do you remember the movie “Alien”, in which extra-terrestrials burrowed into flesh of a space ship’s crew members, slowly taking over the control of their behavior, while eating the hosts from the inside? If you believe such a scenario belongs only in the realm of fantasy, then you are mistaken. The alien stowaway is very close. Crawling, shape-shifting beings may enter our bodies whenever we eat a steak tartare or a rare one. An alien can attack us when we cut meat on the same chopping board we use to prepare other foods. It may enter our bodies by contact with an outdoor cat’s feces, because it is cats that are the final prey of the invisible foe. Parasites, whose […]

Autoimmunologial encephalitis in children

Researchers form three different countries have published a review article in “Neurology” (June 2017) regarding autoimmunologial encephalitis. Some of the topics this comprehensive publication touches on are: diagnostic challenges, methods of detecting antibodies, decisions regarding treatment, seronegative cases, and challenges in monitoring patients. Key information: Many of the known cases of autoimmunological encephalitis are central nervous system dysfunctions, which can be treated by immune therapy – the sooner, the better. In some cases, a second-line treatment may prove necessary. No randomized controlled clinical research have been conducted yet. An agreement regarding diagnostic criteria has been reached, however some areas still require additional tests among children. A large amount of children suspected of autoimmunological encephalitis are seronegative, or do not have […]

Diet and Inflammation in Brain Aging and Dementia

How diet affects inflammation and dementia Scientists believe they have discovered a factor proving the effects of diet on dementia. By combining particular eating habits with the level of inflammation markers in the blood, they have shown that in older people who do not eat sufficiently balanced meals, the amount of gray matter in the brain is below average, and that their visual-cognitive functions are impaired. “People with diets deficient in omega-3, calcium, vitamins E, D, B5 and B2 have an elevated level of inflammation markers” said Yian Gu, doctor at Columbia University and Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain, New York. Inflammation-causing diet is adverse both to cognitive functions and to the brain itself. […]
